Owen Wafle spent one season with the Wolverines. The New Jersey native will join the Nittany Lions in 2025. Penn State received its second post-Orange Bowl transfer commitment on Saturday night, as former Michigan defensive tackle Owen Wafle confirmed he will play for the Nittany Lions in 2025. Wafle has four years of eligibility remaining after not playing during the 2024 Michigan Wolverines season. T.J. Shanahan, a former Texas A&M offensive lineman, announced his transfer to Penn State on Saturday.
Wafle, a New Jersey native who attended the Hun School, committed to Michigan’s 2024 recruiting class in 2023. He did so one year after initially committed to Notre Dame. According to the 247Sports Composite, Wafle was a 4-star prospect and the sixth-best player overall in New Jersey. The 6-2, 298-pound defensive tackle was also rated a 4-star prospect by ESPN.
Penn State did not initially offer Wafle a scholarship, but became engaged when the defensive lineman entered the portal following Michigan’s ReliaQuest Bowl victory over Alabama. He joins Penn State’s defensive line, which will be led by star tackle Zane Durant, who announced his comeback earlier Saturday. Penn State also lost defensive tackle T.A. Cunningham from their 2024 recruiting class through the transfer portal.
Penn State has signed five athletes from the portal, including former USC receiver Kyron Hudson and former Texas A&M defensive lineman Enai White. Notably, Penn State is also interested in Luke Wafle, a 2026 defensive tackle at Hun School and Owen’s younger brother. Luke Wafle has had two unofficial visits to Penn State since receiving a scholarship offer in January 2024. Luke Wafle is a 4-star prospect and the second-best player in New Jersey for the 2026 recruiting cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite.
