Curley Hallman is a coach that many Tiger fans will remember since he had the lowest victory percentage in LSU football history for a coach who coached more than one season. Hallman was hired to replace Mike Archer, who had two consecutive losing seasons to end his LSU coaching career. In his first season, Hallman had to deal with allegations that his players started a fight with the LSU men’s basketball team.
Hallman then led LSU to its third consecutive losing season, the first since the 1950s. His second season was not much better, as the Tigers finished with the worst record in school history up to that moment.
Hallman never had a winning season during his four years at LSU. In 1994, the Tigers blew a 23-9 lead in the fourth quarter against Auburn before losing to Southern Miss, signaling the end of his career. LSU athletic director Joe Dean gave Hallman an ultimatum: quit or be dismissed, and when Hallman refused to resign, he was fired but permitted to continue his final season.
Hallman is the only coach in LSU football history since the SEC’s inception who has never won a season or appeared in a bowl game.
