The Dallas Cowboys have finally decided whether to extend their backup quarterback ahead of NFL free agency.

With three Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks about to enter NFL free agency, the franchise is developing a backup plan. The Dallas Cowboys will have some questions to answer during NFL free agency in order to acquire a backup plan for Dak Prescott. Trey Lance and Cooper Rush are both poised to become free agents, so the team has already taken steps to ensure that at least one quarterback remains on the roster beyond Dak.

This week, the Cowboys extended backup quarterback Will Grier’s contract. Grier, 29, joined the Cowboys in November as a member of the practice squad. He was Lance’s backup in the season finale but saw no action. Grier previously played with the Cowboys from 2021 to 2022. Grier was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft after transferring from the Florida Gators to play for West Viginia.

He has also appeared on the offseason and/or practice squads of the Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and division foe Philadelphia Eagles. Grier has played sparingly in the NFL, completing only 28 of 52 attempts for 228 yards, no touchdowns, and four interceptions. While there is still hope Lance or Rush will re-sign in Dallas, it appears the team’s contingency plan and QB3 are in place, so get your popcorn ready for free agency.
