The Cincinnati Bengals have come under intense scrutiny this week as multiple players on the roster were hit with financial penalties by the National Football League (NFL) for various on-field rule violations. While the headline may imply organizational misconduct, the reality is that the fines are directed at individual players for infractions committed during recent games. Linebacker Germaine Pratt was among the most notable names on the NFL’s weekly fine report. Pratt was fined $22,511 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris during their Week 18 rivalry matchup. Although the hit was not flagged during the game, a post-game review by the NFL’s disciplinary board determined that the tackle violated player safety rules.
This is not Pratt’s first infraction of the season. Just weeks earlier, he was fined $16,883 for executing a hip-drop tackle — a move that has become increasingly scrutinized due to its potential to cause injury. With multiple fines in a single season, Pratt’s actions have fueled concern over a pattern of aggressive play that borders on recklessness.
Joining Pratt in the league’s penalty spotlight is linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither. He was fined $14,956 for a hip-drop tackle against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the same game. Like Pratt, Davis-Gaither’s tackle was not penalized on the field, but league officials later ruled that it posed a significant safety risk.
Cornerback Josh Newton was also fined $4,885 for unsportsmanlike conduct. According to league sources, the fine stemmed from a “violent gesture” he made after a defensive stop in a game against the Denver Broncos. Although the gesture was not captured on the television broadcast, officials noted it in their post-game review, and the fine was imposed accordingly.
Despite these penalties being directed at individual players, the Cincinnati Bengals as an organization are feeling the impact. The team has drawn criticism from analysts and fans alike for what appears to be a lapse in player discipline. Head Coach Zac Taylor addressed the situation in a recent press conference, stating that the team takes all player conduct seriously and will take steps to prevent future incidents.
“We want our players to compete hard, but also to play within the rules,” Taylor said. “We’re reviewing each of these incidents and working with our guys to make sure they understand what’s acceptable and what puts them — and the team — at risk.”
