In a significant shake-up within Kansas State University’s athletic department, longtime Athletic Director Gene Taylor has been officially relieved of his duties. The decision, which comes as a surprise to many within the collegiate athletics community, signals a pivotal turning point for the Wildcats as the university seeks a new direction for its sports programs.
Gene Taylor, who had served as Kansas State’s athletic director since 2017, was known for bringing stability, leadership, and a forward-looking vision to the department. During his tenure, he oversaw numerous high-profile hires, spearheaded fundraising efforts, and initiated major facility renovations. His leadership saw the Wildcats claim a Big 12 football championship and reach the Elite Eight in men’s basketball—two of the most notable accomplishments in recent K-State sports history.

Additionally, Taylor successfully launched several key facility improvement projects, including updates to Bill Snyder Family Stadium and enhancements to student-athlete training centers. Financially, he helped increase revenue streams and donor engagement during a time when many athletic departments faced budgetary constraints.

According to university sources, the decision was made in the interest of positioning Kansas State athletics for long-term, sustained success and adapting to the evolving landscape of collegiate sports—especially amid the growing influence of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) agreements and the transfer portal.
Kansas State University has yet to name an interim athletic director but has confirmed that a national search for Taylor’s successor will begin immediately. The university’s leadership is reportedly seeking a candidate with a track record of innovation, program building, and success in navigating the complex challenges facing modern college athletics. The new athletic director will be tasked not only with stabilizing the current programs but also with expanding Kansas State’s national presence and competitiveness across all sports.
