Ryan Reynolds hopes to return with Hugh Jackman and filmmaker Shawn Levy after the huge success of his superhero sequel Deadpool & Wolverine. In a new interview with Variety, the 48-year-old actor and writer stated that he plans to spend the next year penning a new film in which he would co-star with Jackman, 56, and Levy will direct. ‘I’m spending the year writing,’ Reynolds stated in an interview, after his response to Martha Stewart’s claim that he was not amusing.
‘I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh (Jackman), and Shawn (Levy, center) that isn’t Marvel,’ Reynolds stated. The actor and screenwriter would not reveal any information about the project, although it would be his first non-Marvel film with Jackman. Following the phenomenal success of his superhero sequel Deadpool and Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds is hoping to rejoin with Hugh Jackman and filmmaker Shawn Levy.
While Reynolds is primarily recognized for his acting, he co-wrote Deadpool 2 and Deadpool 3 with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the original Deadpool authors. He also produced the Fubo TV series Bedtime Stories with Ryan and has another project in the works that he wrote.
Reynolds was reported in February 2023 to appear in, co-write, and produce a comedy film called Boy Band for Paramount. While storyline specifics were kept under wraps, The Hollywood Reporter labeled the film as a ‘boy band reunion movie’. Reynolds co-wrote the script with Jesse Andrews (Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl) and will produce under his business Maximum Effort. Levy was also on board to produce through his 21 Laps Entertainment company, with plans to direct as well. Reynolds may have been referring to Boy Band when he mentioned spending the next year writing, although this has yet to be confirmed.
Reynolds could possibly be developing a screenplay for a film adaptation of Freida McFadden’s best-selling novel Never Lie, which Levy was recently asked to produce. Levy agreed to develop and produce the film for Netflix, but no writer was revealed when the announcement came in late July. The 2022 novel follows a wedding couple searching for their dream home until they become stuck at the estate of a prominent psychiatrist who vanished four years before. The woman discovers a trove of old interviews, which reveal a terrible story about the doctor… and a patient who sounds strangely familiar.
Given the success of Deadpool and Wolverine, which grossed $636.7 million domestically and $1.337 billion worldwide, a film reuniting the two main stars and the director would undoubtedly be welcomed by any studio. There is no word on whether the film is set up at a studio, but Reynolds’ Maximum Effort has a first-look agreement at Paramount, while Levy’s 21 Laps is set up at Netflix. Before this year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Jackman previously collaborated with Levy on Real Steel (2011).
Reynolds and Levy first collaborated on Free Guy in 2021, then on The Adam Project and Deadpool & Wolverine in 2022, respectively.
