Sunderland’s head coach, Régis Le Bris, has addressed potential suspension difficulties before of their game against Preston North End this week. Patrick Roberts, Chris Rigg, and Trai Hume all received four yellow cards so far this season. Five cautions prior to the 19th game of the season will result in a one-game suspension. Jobe has four bookings but will miss three games after being sent off against QPR.
Roberts was the latest player to be suspended after receiving a yellow card against QPR at Loftus Road last weekend as the Black Cats drew 0-0 in the Championship. “He’s experienced, and he did very well,” Le Bris said of Roberts. “Patrick was really thrilled against QPR because it was a tough game and he defended so well with the squad, so a guy like him is important to the team thinking. I’m sure he prefers to have the ball at his feet, but this game was quite demanding in that regard, and he performed admirably.
“I’m extremely happy for him, and he’ll handle the issue, but you know that in football, sometimes you have to commit a foul because it’s vital for the team, and when you do, you have to wait one game. “We’ll see,” Le Bris concluded. “We know we have a lot of players with four yellow cards, so we’re not sure when it’ll happen. For Trai, for example, he went six games in a row without receiving a yellow card, so I’m not sure whether it will last another ten. So, if he’s ready, it’s fantastic for us, but we’ll have to deal with unanticipated scenarios.
“You can see that when a player has to deal with a new situation, he can change his behavior because it was really intense, sometimes too intense. I recall a moment at home, a big tackle against, I’m not sure, very early in the game that resulted in a yellow but most likely a red card, and he never played like that again.
“So he handled the issue admirably, and I believe it is beneficial to him because having this condition forces you to think differently, and he is improving his behavior on the field. “Yeah, I’m very happy,” Le Bris said about Hume. On Sunderland’s strong start to the Championship season, Le Bris said: “Yes, it’s still a start; it’ll be 15 games, which is only one turn, or less than one turn. Winning is vital, but so is improving, and winning is not simple, as evidenced by Burnley’s 1-0 loss at Millwall.
“This league is very tough so when you can win and you have a good dynamic, impose your game when it’s possible so it’s important and I think we are winning one, two or three more players in the squad progressively so it’s good for the length of the league and when I hope we’ll have the full team it will be more powerful, more experienced and the second part of the league we’ll see, it’s very far.”
