‘They have shown’ – Wilson Isidor and Jayden Danns verdict as Sunderland could switch tactics

Sunderland bought Jayden Danns from Liverpool on transfer deadline day, looking to add further firepower to their Championship promotion quest. Former Championship striker Sam Parkin thought Liverpool loanee Jayden Danns and Sunderland star Wilson Isidor might be a potent combination. The 43-year-old former Swindon Town, Ipswich Town, and Luton Town forward was impressed that Sunderland went into the winter transfer season looking to add additional firepower and were able to recruit Danns from Liverpool on deadline day.

The Black Cats battled off heavy competition from Hull City to sign Danns, who will have to wait until his debut due to a back ailment. The youngster’s condition was discovered during his medical, and he has returned to his parent club for therapy and rehabilitation. Sunderland striker Isidor is having a good season, and Parkin believes that the combination of Danns and the French forward will pay off for Le Bris’ team. Parkin also stated that a player of Danns’ caliber is an excellent purchase for Sunderland, and that the Liverpool loanee, while not as strong as Isidor, might compliment each other’s games.

Parkin stated on the Championship Check-In Show: “It has been an up-and-down couple of weeks for him [Isidor], but I believe acquiring a young player of Danns’ caliber, they have demonstrated they can play two up as well, successfully. “It has generally been Mayenda and Isidor, or a combination of the two, with one sliding in to some extent, but I believe he could play Danns. I think Danns isn’t as quick on the shoulder as Isidor, so that combo may work, so I think that’s a great deal.”

Sunderland are aiming to gain promotion to the Premier League this season, and Le Bris will be hoping Danns can contribute with key goals. Danns progressed through the Liverpool system and joined the Liverpool U18 team when he was 16. He started the 2023/24 season in excellent form, scoring in every competitive encounter for Liverpool U18s from August to December 2023, for a total of nine goals in seven games. He also had four goals in three games during the 2023/24 U18 Premier League Cup.

Danns made his first-team debut under Jurgen Klopp in the EFL Trophy 2023/24, coming on as a second-half replacement against Morecambe in September 2023. He made his Premier League debut as an 89th-minute substitute in a 4-1 home victory over Luton Town in February 2024. Four days later, he appeared in the 2024 EFL Cup final, where Liverpool defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley Stadium. He scored his first and second goals for Liverpool on February 28, 2024, in a 3-0 home win over Southampton in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Last March, he signed a long-term contract at Anfield.
