Ipswich Town were denied a penalty kick as referee Michael Oliver was ordered to the monitor for a VAR check against Everton. The Premier League has explained why Ipswich Town were denied a penalty following a VAR examination in their match against Everton at Portman Road. In the 25th minute, referee Michael Oliver signaled to the spot after Iliman Ndiaye had put the Toffees ahead. Dwight McNeil had been ruled to have fouled Jack Clarke, but in scenes reminiscent of Everton’s previous meeting at Goodison Park, when Dominic Calvert-Lewin was denied a penalty against Dan Burn, it was the Ipswich player who looked to make contact with Everton’s winger.
And so it proved when Oliver was summoned to the screen and reversed his first choice. Everton would extend their lead later in the first half, thanks to a powerful finish from centre-back Michael Keane. The league’s match centre explained why the decision was taken. A tweet read: “The referee awarded a penalty to Ipswich for McNeil’s foul on Clarke. The VAR determined that Clarke kicked the back of McNeil’s leg, but that no foul was committed, and suggested an on-field review. The referee overruled the previous judgment, and play resumed with a drop ball.
