Sunderland may be without one of their sidelined stars until the 2025/26 season, according to reports. Fortunately for Sunderland, their injury list is not as long as it has been in previous seasons. However, Regis Le Bris is still without some crucial first-team players. Before the trip to Hull City this weekend, Le Bris presented the most recent Sunderland team news, announcing that Eliezer Mayenda and Dan Ballard will be out for another week. Salis Abdul Samed and Ahmed Abdullahi remain out until later this year, while Aaron Connolly is expected to make his Sunderland debut against Hull City.
Jenson Seelt and Aji Alese appear to be missing till the New Year, while Niall Huggins’ return date has been uncertain until now. Huggins signed a new contract with Sunderland last week, which runs until the summer of 2026 with the option to extend. Niall Huggins’ injury return date is disclosed, and it’s awful news for Sunderland. Huggins had an outstanding start to last season. The former Leeds United player finally fulfilled his potential, appearing 19 times in the Championship until a catastrophic knee injury ended his season. The defender has not played since December 2023. And now, BBC analyst Nick Barnes has revealed that the 23-year-old might not play again until next season.
Barnes told Total Sport that Huggins had signed a new contract. Huggins, incidentally, appears to have the potential to miss the entire season. That is something that the medical personnel are thinking about right now.” What else has been revealed regarding Niall Huggins’ injury? Huggins’ ailment has received little attention until recently, with the most recent report coming from sporting director Kristjaan Speakman over the summer. He merely stated, “Jenson and Niall are progressing well.”
After Huggins signed a new deal, Speakman stated: “Niall suffered a serious injury just as he was establishing himself in the team, but despite this disappointment, his response has been outstanding. “He is working really hard to place himself in a great position as he continues his recuperation. “This extension removes any ambiguity over his status next summer and allows our focus to be on supporting him over the coming weeks and months.” Barnes’ most recent update appears to be the only real one since Huggins was sidelined about a year ago.
It is apparent that the club is apprehensive about pushing Huggins back into action. But, given his new deal, it’s evident that the club expects Huggins to fully heal and return to the first team.
