Sunderland have been linked with a surprise January transfer push for Jordan Henderson. Régis Le Bris has played down speculation that Jordan Henderson could return to Sunderland in the January transfer season. Le Bris did not rule out a return for the academy graduate, but he stated that he had not addressed a possible move with either sporting director Kristjaan Speakman or majority shareholder Kyril Louis-Dreyfus. Henderson is thought to be open to a January move after playing little this season at Ajax, with a return to the Premier League or the top of the Championship being considered.
“He’s obviously a strong and famous player,” Le Bris added. “The transfer window is currently closed, so we can discuss numerous players but do not have a choice at this time. We haven’t discussed him.” Henderson is under contract with Ajax until the summer of 2026, and head coach Francesco Farioli recently dismissed speculation about a winter transfer: “He is an exceptional player, of great quality and leadership.” He won the Champions League as captain, therefore I believe he can effectively describe what it takes to have a winning mentality and a strong work ethic. There are numerous opportunities to make a significant contribution to a young team like ours.
It remains to be seen whether Henderson will advocate for a return to the UK in the coming weeks and months.
