BBC SPORT: Ashley Young has confirmed the date for his retirement.

‘That’s the day’: Ashley Young knows when he’ll retire as Everton player discusses future plans. The 39-year-old is still confident in his body as he continues to play in the top division with Everton. Ashley Young believes he may still play into his 40s, as the versatile Everton star remains valuable to Sean Dyche. Young’s flexibility to play on both sides of the defence has been critical to the Blues’ early season success, since an injury crisis has hampered the team’s progress. Problems for Vitalii Mykolenko, Seamus Coleman, Nathan Patterson, and James Garner have given him a renewed role in the team, and he might start at Ipswich Town depending on whether Coleman is declared fit to return.

The 39-year-old former Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Inter player made his senior debut with Watford, where Dyche was a prominent figure. The pair reconnected at the start of last season when Young signed for free, and he extended his stay by a year during the summer. It’s unclear whether his future on Merseyside will include the new stadium, but Young feels he’ll be able to play in the coming years. Young, who witnessed his son, Tyler Young, make his professional debut for Peterborough United during the international break, said: “I’m just taking each season as it comes until my body tells me I can’t do it any more.

“Then I believe that is the day I’ll hang up my boots. But it may be a few years, and I’m still feeling as fit as I have in years. Young has made five Premier League appearances for Everton this season. He was sent off against Brighton & Hove Albion on the first day of the season after starting at right-back, but he has since recovered form, making a smart through ball to set up Iliman Ndiaye’s goal at Leicester City and shining against Crystal Palace and Newcastle United. Speaking to club media, Young expressed excitement about an impending run of games that has promise for the Blues.

Following Fulham and Southampton’s visit to Portman Road, he stated: “It’s important for us to start looking at the table and getting points on the board.”But we can’t look too far ahead. We have to look ahead to the next game, which will be away at Ipswich. They want to win, so we know it will be a tough game, but as I previously stated, we are well prepared.”
