New assistant Head Coach turned down manager’s job for Sunderland role

Pedro Ribeiro, the new Assistant Head Coach, was offered the manager’s job and was ready to take over before Sunderland came knocking.

Sunderland appointed Pedro Ribeiro, a Portuguese coach, as Assistant Head Coach today. Ribeiro will support Head Coach Regis Le Bris alongside Mike Dodds, Michael Proctor, and Alessandro Barcherini. According to Record, the 38-year-old was expected to take over as manager of Liga 3 club Academica, and he even attended the team’s recent Portuguese Cup game against Torreense in preparation for a potential appointment.

However, the move collapsed at the final hurdle, with Riberio rejecting the club’s offers owing to ‘other ideas’, which turned out to be a move to the Stadium of Light. Academica instead hired Antonio Barbosa, a former Lank FC manager. Ribeiro had been a free agent since January, when he left his post as manager of Leixoes with a record of 7 wins, 5 draws, and 12 loses in 24 games. One of those defeats, and one of his final games with the club, was a tight 2-1 loss to FC Porto in the Portuguese Cup. His team was tied 1-1 until a player was sent off just before halftime, and the hosts scored the winner five minutes from time.
