The Sunderland manager could be looking to expand his football portfolio. Sunderland co-owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is “interested” in purchasing Brazilian club Vasco da Gama, according to reports. The Frenchman, who became a controlling stakeholder in the Black Cats in 2021, is thought to have begun discussions about acquiring the South American outfit, but no formal proposal has been submitted at the time of writing.
According to UOL, Dimitri Rybolovlev, the owner of AS Monaco, was first considered to be interested in making an offer for Vasco, but it has since been revealed that Louis-Dreyfus is the probable suitor. According to the story, the confusion originated from Louis-Dreyfus and Rybolovlev’s previous relationship.
As things stand, it appears that Louis-Dreyfus is one of several admirers who have “sought information” regarding Vasco’s condition and its relationship with former owners 777 Partners, who are currently suing the club. The investment firm will be familiar to English football fans after their unsuccessful bid to buy Everton earlier this year. Regarding the pending takeover issue, Vasco president Pedrinho stated: “There are numerous models, and a lot can happen.
There may be a businessman capable of investing in Vasco to become champion, there may be people interested in having Vasco as a training facility for great young players, or an investor may want to put money into Vasco initially and then decide to buy SAF after a year, for example. There are currently no proposals to purchase.”
Vasco finished 10th in the 2024 Brazilian Serie A season, and its roster includes former Premier League stars Dimitri Payet and Phillippe Coutinho. In recent weeks, the club has been widely associated with a buyout attempt by Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, but it is now understood that the Greek businessman has altered his focus and is now in talks to buy rival Brazilian club Sao Paulo.
