Leeds United veteran Jon Newsome ridiculed Sunderland fans for singing a song aimed at the Whites, pointing out that they were celebrating a home draw as if it were a win.

The Yorkshire club went to the Stadium of Light on Friday and drew 2-2 with Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland, despite leading 2-1 until the final minute. Sunderland secured a draw in the game thanks to a horrible error by Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier in injury time, keeping them top of the table. Sunderland fans celebrated after the game by singing the ‘Leeds are crumbling apart’ song, which Newsome thought was silly given that they didn’t win. The ex-Leeds defender also insulted Sunderland fans by claiming that the Black Cats did not even draw the game on their own merit; instead, a howler by the Leeds goalie saved them from defeat.

“Absolutely [it’s two points dropped], you have to look at the reaction of the supporters, the Sunderland supporters they are all singing stupid ‘Leeds are falling apart'” , Newsome told the BBC’s Radio Leeds. “You just salvaged; you just nicked what a 2-2 draw at home.   “You are top of the league by a goal that has gone through our goalkeeper’s legs and you know it is more jam than Hartley’s and yet they feel like they won the game.” Both teams will meet again on February 15th, when Leeds will host Sunderland at Elland Road in the opposite fixture.
