The Chicago Cubs look to be interested in signing one of the finest free-agent batters available. The Chicago Cubs have stunned many in recent weeks by entering the sweepstakes for the top free agent batter available, who has struggled to find a deal that suits him. To the surprise of many, the Cubs have surfaced as a surprise bidder for Houston Astros superstar third baseman Alex Bregman, a role he could easily fit into in Chicago and potentially propel the Cubs into the World Series race.
While fans fantasized about Bregman taking over the hot corner at Wrigley Field, the consensus was that it was most likely a pipe dream. Having interest is one thing; having enough interest to make a reasonable offer is another. That pessimism appeared to be validated when it was revealed that, while Chicago adored Bregman, they were only interested in the type of short-term contract that brought Cody Bellinger to Chicago. The two-time World Series champion did not seem eager to even entertain such a contract.
However, on Friday, MLB expert and former general manager Jim Bowden revealed that the Cubs are the most aggressive team currently pursuing Bregman. What what it means remains to be seen, but is it possible Chicago has moved on from its reported first three-year offer with opt-outs?
It’s improbable that Jed Hoyer, president of baseball operations, and his team would suddenly strike a long-term mega-deal. However, given the trajectory of Bregman’s free agency, it’s not impossible that the Cubs have increased their offer if Bregman truly wants to play in Chicago. The fact that he is still unsigned shows that he either has preferred areas to play or has not received an offer that would entice him to sign with that organization. If the Cubs are one of those teams for Bregman, which makes a lot of sense, the two sides may be able to compromise and reach an agreement that benefits both.
Free agency is barely weeks away, and the slugger will need to make a decision about his future sooner rather than later. It’s unclear whether or not that decision will involve him playing in the Windy City, but it certainly feels less like a pipe dream today than it did last week.
