Schottenheimer spoke at his inaugural press conference on Monday about his delight in having top-ranked rushing offenses during his offensive coordinator career. It’s safe to assume that will be a priority in Dallas by 2025. “We want to be able to run the ball,” Jones stated. “Everybody says we want to run the ball and stop the run, and that is exactly what we want to do. That is what great championship football teams do, and I am sure coach Schottenheimer wants to do it. I believe it is critical that we hire a coach that will excel in the run game.
That’s why Dorsey is being considered. In 2022 (139.5) and 2023 (130.1), his Buffalo attacks ranked eighth in the NFL in terms of rushing yards per game. Dorsey’s 2024 attack in Cleveland, which averaged the fourth-lowest rushing yards per game (94.6) in the league, was destined to collapse due to quarterback Deshaun Watson’s poor play leading up to a season-ending injury and running back Nick Chubb’s season-ending injury. Dorsey became the Browns’ fall guy after Cleveland went 3-14 to secure the second overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft; head coach Kevin Stefanski assigned him offensive play-calling duties throughout the season and has now reverted them for 2025 following Dorsey’s departure.
By extending Lunda Wells, the Cowboys will add some consistency to their coaching staff in 2025. The celebrated tight ends coach has agreed to terms on a contract extension that will keep him with the organization indefinitely, which can only be seen as good news for Schottenheimer’s offensive ideas and the ongoing development of talent such as Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker.
Wells, a Louisiana native, started his coaching career as a high school offensive line coach before moving on to LSU as an offensive line assistant. He was then promoted to assistant head coach and assistant special teams coach at the Tigers before moving on to the NFL as the New York Giants’ offensive line quality control coach in 2012. His career eventually led him to become the Giants’ tight ends coach before bringing his talents to the Cowboys in 2020, where he’s helped develop household names out of Dalton Schultz and Jake Ferguson, two former fourth-round picks, with Ferguson earning a Pro Bowl nomination in 2023.
