Everton will undergo a defensive revamp following the acquisition of Jake O’Brien. Ben Godfrey has already earned a surprise move to Italy, while Michael Keane and Mason Holgate could be sent packing. Jarrad Branthwaite’s future remains uncertain as Manchester United continue to study him, but Everton are desperate to keep the centre-back. The Toffees may yet attempt to sign another defender if their options narrow further, but they are prepared to limit their spending after spending more than £40 million this summer. Everton could now turn to the free agent market, as they are apparently exploring a surprise move for a former rival.
Everton poised to swoop in for the Premier League winner. According to CaughtOffside, Everton has entered the market to capture former Liverpool defender Joel Matip. The 32-year-old was dismissed by the Reds at the end of the season after suffering numerous injuries throughout his career. Matip was a fan favourite at Liverpool, where he made over 200 appearances and helped the club win six titles. The Cameroonian contributed significantly to their win and was widely praised, with Pep Guardiola earlier impressed by his performance against Manchester City. In the year 2022, the Spanish player said: “(Haaland) scored a great goal today, helped us a lot, fought against Matip and Gomez, who are so strong and fast as well, so that’s why it is a next step.”
Matip is currently looking for a new club and could perhaps return to Merseyside, but Everton face competition from Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen. Would Joel Matip be a good signing for Everton? On his day, Matip was unquestionably one of the best center-backs in the Premier League. However, the veteran has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, most notably missing almost 200 days due to a cruciate ligament damage, and has not played since December. According to Spotrac, Matip earned roughly £100,000 per week at Anfield, which is less than only two other players at Goodison Park. The 32-year-old is certainly still a very fine defender, but his injury record and exorbitant salary should put Everton off.
Not to mention his loyalty to Liverpool, which may pose more headaches than it is worth. His time with the Reds will almost certainly put him off, but he could be enticed to return to Germany with the defending Bundesliga champions.
