David Gilmour declared Pink Floyd was ‘finished’ nearly ten years ago, but his bandmate believes they may still release new music despite the ongoing rivalry. Nick Mason believes Roger Waters and David may reconcile their differences and return to create new music — or at least AI versions of it. The 80-year-old drummer believes that artificial intelligence duplicates of his colleagues may bury the hatchet on behalf of their real-life counterparts. After arguing over creative differences in the 1980s, Roger and David went toe-to-toe when the bassist attempted to dissolve Pink Floyd in a legal battle.
Years later, the conflict persists, with Roger alleging he was ‘banned’ from the Pink Floyd website in 2020. Nick isn’t waiting for a reunion with the real-life combo; instead, he’s hoping to perform again with a computer-generated version of everyone. Nick told The Sunday Mirror (via Music News): “It would be fascinating to see what AI could do with new music.” If you attempted to run it as a sort of “Where did Pink Floyd go after?” As a founding member of the renowned group, Nick expressed sorrow that their legacy had been damaged by the consequences.
He went on to say, “The thing to do would be to have an AI situation in which David and Roger become friends again.” We may be like ABBA by the end of it.’ Abba’s Voyage venue features the Swedish pop wonder reuniting as holograms of their younger selves and performing their greatest hits in a purpose-built London stadium. Despite realizing the potential, Nick was unimpressed with the Abbatars, claiming that he did not become swept up in the magic and believed they were real.
He applauded the live band that sang Does Your Mother Know instead of the reproduced Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The musician stated that it was in the band’s best interests to keep things going and capitalize on fans’ fond memories of past tracks. AI-generated music has become a major issue in the industry, with some artists welcoming new technology and others claiming it destroys originality. As for whether there would be Pink Floyd avatars, Nick added: ‘If someone came up with all the money and all the amazing ideas, and then we agreed to a series of very, very rigorous and onerous terms, I’d say, “Yeah, OK.”‘
While Nick remains hopeful, it appears like David and Roger will not reconcile anytime soon in the real world, as they continue to clash. Last year, David’s wife accused Roger of harboring anti-Semitic beliefs, which have been leveled at the singer by several different people. When he appeared on stage in Berlin wearing a German outfit like that of a Nazi SS commander, there was public outrage, notably from David’s wife, Polly Samson, aged 60.
She accused him of being a ‘Vladimir Putin apologist’ in an open letter on social media, which he has consistently rejected. In 2022, Pink Floyd released their first new track in over 25 years in solidarity of the Ukrainian people. Hey, Hey! Rise Up! Roger’s involvement was not mentioned, but re-released Dark Side of the Moon songs still credit him.
