The only teams still looking to hire a head coach are the Saints and Cowboys. The Raiders hired Pete Carroll on Friday morning, leaving the Saints as one of just two teams without a head coach. The second opening is with the Dallas Cowboys, which might go coach Brian Schottenheimer. That is actually very excellent news for New Orleans for a number of reasons. For starters, they can take their time identifying the best option for their next head coach. Furthermore, it may allow them to sign Mike McCarthy, Joe Brady, or Kliff Kingsbury. There is also the prospect of making Darren Rizzi their guy.
Mike Kafka and Anthony Weaver are scheduled to interview in New Orleans, with Weaver on Friday and Kafka on Saturday. Mike McCarthy should appear next week. Other candidates that the Saints could consider are Brian Flores and Vance Joseph. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis stated that the team wanted to hire the finest coach possible and that they were not in a rush. They’ve also had months to prepare for this since they were eliminated from the playoffs. The new head coach will also be empowered to make decisions on the coaching staff.
On the surface, the Saints appear to be a disorganized bunch. They’re about to enter Senior Bowl week with a focus on finding their next head coach. Sure, interviews are lining up once the huge South Louisiana winter has passed. However, New Orleans believes they are behind the eight ball. Things can probably come together quickly for the Saints, but it does not feel that way right now. However, we can confirm that interviews have been planned and that there are still good prospects available for hire. However, they utterly missed out on Aaron Glenn, which is not surprising.
We continue to look at some of the Saints’ coaching prospects, beginning with the lesser-known and working our way up. After discussing Anthony Weaver, we go on to Mike Kafka. Mike Kafka, another former Eagles player, was taken 122nd overall in the fourth round in 2010. Philly went 10-6 and 8-8 in his first two seasons, and Kafka only appeared in four games in 2011.
