Lewis Warrington has stated that he will leave Everton this summer after 15 years with the club. On July 15, the Toffees midfielder thanked the staff for their assistance over his 15-year career on Merseyside, having come through the development ranks. Warrington, 21, came to Plymouth Argyle on loan last season, but due to injury, the move was halted early in January, and his contract at Goodison Park was let to expire this summer. He and Andre Gomes leave on free transfers, while another midfielder, Amadou Onana, is on the verge of a big-money move to Aston Villa. Warrington’s time with his hometown club has ended disappointingly during the last two years, just as he appeared to be on track for a first-team debut under Frank Lampard. The then-teenager impressed the former boss during the 2022 preseason, and he signed a new Everton contract while other clubs were interested. However, he moved for a season on loan at League One Fleetwood Town, and despite being a regular there, he returned after Lampard was ousted and replaced by Sean Dyche.
The promotion to Championship level with Plymouth Argyle was unsuccessful, as his injury limited him to only four matches in all competitions. Dyche gave him only his second first-team game for the club, coming on as a late substitute against Sheffield United on May 11, although he clearly had no long-term aspirations for him. Tim Iroegbunam, also 21, has been bought permanently from Aston Villa to help restock the midfield after departures, and Chelsea’s Lesley Ugochukwu is a loan target to cover Onana’s spot [Foot Mercato, 13 July], so Warrington will look to make a fresh start elsewhere.
