Just In: Milwaukee Brewers Relief Pitcher Signs with the Chicago Cubs for $109.5 million

The Milwaukee Brewers are noted for acquiring journeymen relief pitchers and having them produce career numbers for them, regardless of how long or short their tenure with the team is. It was true when Craig Counsell was Milwaukee’s manager, and it is still true now that Pat Murphy is heading the Brewers. This season, Milwaukee hopes to make the most of relatively unknown pitchers such as Grant Wolfram, Connor Thomas, and Grant Anderson. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs are looking to a former Brewers relief pitcher in the hopes of adding to their bullpen depth. Former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Trevor Richards has signed with the Chicago Cubs.

On Monday, it was reported that former Brewers bullpen pitcher Trevor Richards had signed a minor league deal with the Cubs. Richards spent last season with the Toronto Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins, earning a 2-2 record with 4.55 and 1.21 ERA, respectively. He also led the American League in wild pitches, with 13. Brewers fans may not remember Richards because he only participated in 15 games for the team in 2021. He was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays after the season began, in the same trade that brought Willy Adames to the organization.

However, while Adames went on to become a fan favorite and one of the most beloved Brewers players in recent memory, Richards was moved again shortly thereafter for Rowdy Tellez. Having said that, his 3.20 ERA with Milwaukee is his best among all of the teams for which he has played. Richards has played for five teams in his seven-year career, posting a 24-28 record with a 4.50 ERA.
