Everton’s former manager, Keith Wyness, claims the club is now in a “position of strength” to maintain Jarrad Branthwaite following the unofficial “deadline” of June 30. Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, claimed Sir Jim Ratcliffe will have to “learn” after making a “ridiculous” offer for the 22-year-old.
On Tuesday (2 July), Football Insider reported that Manchester United are now unwilling to pay Everton’s £70 million asking price for centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite. United’s initial bid of about £35 million plus add-ons was rejected last month, and the Toffees have since presented their 2023-24 accounts, hoping to avoid a Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach.
According to Football Insider (4 July), Manchester City is the latest Premier League club to express interest in signing Branthwaite. Everton are now in ‘position of strength’ to keep Branthwaite, according to Wyness. The centre-back was a regular for Sean Dyche last season and just made his senior England debut.
Wyness told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “Now that we’ve passed the 30 June deadline, we’re in a position of strength.”We can turn down ludicrous bids, such as Man United’s for Jarrad Branthwaite.That is something that the entire football community can agree on, and it has not benefited either United or Ratcliffe.
“He will learn as he goes; you cannot do that. “I’m hoping the Branthwaite situation will be resolved with him staying past this summer deadline.”
