In a surprising and swift decision, the Columbus Blue Jackets have parted ways with General Manager Don Waddell after just one season at the helm. The move comes after mounting internal frustrations and external criticism regarding the team’s direction, disappointing results, and underwhelming player development during the 2024–25 NHL season.
Waddell, who was appointed in May 2024 following his departure from the Carolina Hurricanes, was brought in to inject experience and stability into a struggling franchise. At the time of his hiring, expectations were high. Waddell had a reputation for building competitive rosters, having led the Hurricanes to multiple playoff appearances and a steady rise as a perennial contender during his tenure in Carolina.
However, Waddell’s tenure in Columbus did not deliver the turnaround many had hoped for. The Blue Jackets ended the season with a 33–42–7 record, finishing near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. The team once again missed the playoffs, marking their fifth consecutive season without postseason hockey.
Sources close to the organization indicate that the decision to dismiss Waddell was not solely based on the team’s win-loss record. Internal tensions reportedly developed between Waddell and key members of the front office, including disagreements over player acquisitions, coaching strategy, and long-term development plans. Furthermore, the Blue Jackets’ inability to make meaningful improvements in defense and goaltending — areas Waddell had publicly committed to strengthening — became a point of growing frustration for ownership and fans alike.
Team president Mike Priest issued a brief statement following the dismissal: “We are grateful to Don for his efforts and leadership over the past year. However, after a thorough review, we believe that a change in direction is necessary to fulfill the potential of our team and better serve our fans moving forward.”
Waddell, for his part, released a measured response, thanking the organization for the opportunity. “It has been an honor to work with the Columbus Blue Jackets organization. Though our progress was not as swift as we had hoped, I believe in the talent within this roster and wish the team nothing but success moving forward.”
The firing now raises pressing questions for the Blue Jackets, who find themselves in a state of flux with the NHL Draft and free agency fast approaching. A search for a new general manager is already underway, and speculation is swirling around several candidates, including current assistant general managers and experienced executives currently out of contract.
This development also places pressure on the Blue Jackets’ young core, including players like Adam Fantilli and Kent Johnson, whose progression will be closely monitored under new leadership. The team’s next general manager will be tasked not only with revitalizing a deflated fanbase but also with correcting years of underperformance and missed opportunities.
As Columbus looks to rebuild once again, the departure of Don Waddell underscores the unforgiving nature of professional sports management — and how quickly expectations can turn into exits when results fail to materialize.
