Just In: Detroit Lions Cling to the Past: Re-Signing Veteran Lineman Signals Fear of Change

The Detroit Lions have officially re-signed veteran interior offensive lineman Kayode Awosika to a new contract, avoiding the restricted free agency process. Awosika, who began his career with the Eagles, was signed by the Lions off Philadelphia’s practice squad in 2022. That season, he played in 10 games, contributing in four and starting two. By 2023, he had secured the OG3 role, serving as the primary backup at both guard positions. He played in 18 games, including the playoffs, and started four, notably stepping in during the NFC Championship.

In 2024, Awosika entered the season as Detroit’s top reserve guard and started in Weeks 4 and 7. However, he was later surpassed on the depth chart by rookie Christian Mahogany and was inactive for several games before returning in Week 16 and the playoffs, primarily on special teams.

With his return in 2025, the Lions have retained all their interior offensive linemen from 2024 except for starting right guard Kevin Zeitler. The leading candidates for starting guard spots are Graham Glasgow and Mahogany, but Awosika, Netane Muti, Michael Niese, and Kingsley Eguakun will compete for roles. Given that only Glasgow, Mahogany, and center Frank Ragnow are signed beyond this season, the Lions are expected to seek additional depth in the draft, possibly as early as the first round, to reinforce their offensive line for the future.
