NFL Snubs Lions: League Rejects Rule Change That Would Boost Dan Campbell’s Grit-Fueled Squad
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell and his team received disappointing news regarding a proposed rule change that could have worked in their favor for the 2025 season. Each year, the NFL reviews and updates its rules, with the latest discussions set to take place soon. However, one potential change that seemed tailor-made for Campbell’s coaching style won’t be implemented.
Onside Kick Rule and Its Impact on the Lions
According to NFL analyst Mike Payton in a March 27 feature for A to Z Sports, the league has decided not to adopt an alternative to the onside kick. The UFL recently introduced a rule allowing teams to attempt a 4th-and-12 play from their own 28-yard line instead of a traditional onside kick, a move that could have benefited the Lions.
Payton highlighted how the current onside kick rules have already diminished its effectiveness, requiring teams to declare their intentions in advance. In 2024, there were 42 onside kick attempts across the league, with only three being successful. The Lions attempted two and failed both times, despite their success on fourth-down conversions—a staple of Campbell’s aggressive coaching style.
While reports suggested the NFL was considering an alternative, executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent confirmed on March 26 that the rule would remain unchanged. Vincent emphasized that the league’s decision was based on maintaining competitiveness and avoiding gimmicks, with teams reluctant to adopt a model similar to what has been tested in other leagues.
