Heupel is widely known for his high-powered offensive schemes and for making significant improvements in the teams he has coached.

Early Career

Heupel’s football journey began as a player. He was a standout quarterback at the University of Oklahoma, where he led the Sooners to a national championship in 2000. His strong performance at Oklahoma earned him a spot as a first-round pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, though his professional career was shorter than many anticipated due to injury. Heupel’s coaching career began at his alma mater, Oklahoma, where he worked as a graduate assistant before moving on to coaching positions at various colleges. He became the offensive coordinator at the University of Utah and later at the University of Oklahoma, where he helped develop a dynamic offense that became a hallmark of his coaching style.

In 2018, Heupel took over as the head coach of UCF, where he led the program to great success. Under Heupel’s leadership, UCF became one of the most exciting programs in college football, known for its fast-paced offense and impressive wins, including an undefeated season in 2017.
