Chicago Cubs Make Trade for Los Angeles Dodgers Reliever

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs have been among the more active teams in baseball this winter. While the Cubs are many pieces away from the Dodgers, they’ve had an excellent summer and may be closer to contention than some believe. On Tuesday night, two people concluded a trade that made sense for both parties. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Chicago will acquire right-hander Ryan Brasier from Los Angeles.

“Sources tell ESPN that the Chicago Cubs are trading for right-handed reliever Ryan Brasier from the Los Angeles Dodgers. “Brasier, 37, was DFA’d last week but should provide leverage innings for Chicago,” Passan wrote. Brasier was unexpectedly designated for assignment by the Dodgers last week, which should not have cost the Cubs much. Passan did not specify which players were going to Los Angeles or whether the deal was solely for cash.

Brasier made 29 appearances in 2024 and had a 3.54 ERA. He was outstanding, but much better in 2023, with a 0.70 ERA in 39 games. With so much quality in their bullpen, Los Angeles made the decision to move on from Brasier. It may not be the best idea if he returns to his 2023 form. Chicago can only hope that’s the case.
