Packers to Replace Adam Stenavich: Losing Adam Stenavich to a different offensive coordinator opportunity would not be without precedent.

Losing Adam Stenavich to a different offensive coordinator position would not be unprecedented. Nobody knows this better than Matt LaFleur. Green Bay, Wisconsin – Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich has interviewed for the same position with the Seattle Seahawks, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones. Letting Stenavich leave would not be unprecedented.

After the 2017 season, a young offensive coordinator named Matt LaFleur interviewed for the Tennessee Titans’ head coaching position. At the time, LaFleur was the offensive coordinator for Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay who did not call plays. Green Bay uses a similar scheme, with LaFleur serving as the offense’s leader and play-caller. So McVay permitted LaFleur to make a similar move to become the Titans’ offensive coordinator, a position he occupied for one season before becoming the Packers’ coach in 2019.

This head coaching cycle, Stenavich had one interview with the Chicago Bears, but the job went to Ben Johnson, the Detroit Lions’ play-calling coordinator. While Johnson was regarded as the best candidate available, there is little doubt that Stenavich’s lack of play-calling experience influenced how the Bears and the other clubs seeking a coach perceived him. Seattle would provide an opportunity to expand his resume. Mike Macdonald, a defense-focused coach who arrived in Seattle a year ago, is the Seahawks’ head coach. About three weeks ago, he fired Ryan Grubb, his offensive coordinator.

Stenavich has been LaFleur’s offensive coordinator for the previous three seasons. His teams finished 17th in yards and 14th in points in Aaron Rodgers’ final season as quarterback in 2022, 11th in yards and 12th in points in Jordan Love’s debut season as quarterback in 2023, and fifth in yards and eighth in points in 2024. “It’s very collaborative,” LaFleur remarked in November, when Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr featured Stenavich and Hafley in an article about prospective head coaches. “I always ask him.

‘Hey, what runs do you enjoy?’ What’s impressed me about him is his dedication in the passing game and the amount of time he’s spent mastering it since being our coordinator, so I believe he is totally capable. “I would have no concerns or hesitation; he might as well call it on game day. I am confident in him and his abilities. It’s a team effort with all of our guys. And I believe he is more than deserving of that opportunity.”

Stenavich, 41, is a Marshfield, Wisconsin native who played college football at Michigan. After college, he had the opportunity to play for the Carolina Panthers, Packers, Dallas Cowboys, and Houston Texans before returning to Michigan as a strength and conditioning intern (2011) and graduate assistant coach (2012 and 2013). He went on to coach the offensive line at Northern Arizona in 2014 and San Jose State in 2015 and 2016, before joining the 49ers as an assistant offensive line coach in 2017 and 2018. Stenavich joined LaFleur’s first Green Bay coaching staff in 2019 as an offensive line coach.

“It’s been really fun, actually,” Stenavich stated in 2022, after succeeding Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator when Hackett was named coach of the Denver Broncos. “My entire career as a coach leading up to this has been focused on the offensive line, the run game, the pass protections, and other aspects, so it’s been very cool to delve into the pass game in more depth and really dig into it. As a coach, it’s exciting to learn new things, and the opportunity to grow and improve is invaluable. So, this has been a lot of fun for me, just learning more about football.”

If Stenavich is hired in Seattle, Jason Vrable, a receivers coach turned passing game coordinator, is one internal possibility to take his place as offensive coordinator. It would be the natural next step for the 39-year-old’s career. He began his NFL career as a quality control coach with the Buffalo Bills from 2013 to 2015. He joined LaFleur’s original staff in 2019 and was elevated to receivers coach in 2020, receivers coach and passing game coordinator in 2022, and outright passing game coordinator by 2024.

“I’m so impressed with his work ethic, how detailed and thorough he is,” LaFleur stated in 2020. “He understands what we’re attempting to do and why we’re doing it all. “He is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen.” Vrable is the offensive coordinator for the National Team in this week’s Senior Bowl.
