The New Orleans Saints are among five NFL clubs still looking for a new head coach this offseason. They have met with various prospects. Some of them are returning for second interviews. Other candidates have already accepted positions elsewhere. However, after weeks of vetting the top coaching candidates for the 2025 job cycle, the Saints may be very close to making a decision.
After Aaron Glenn, New Orleans Saints may prefer Mike McCarthy
Now that the New Orleans Saints are further along in their search to replace Dennis Allen, a couple of finalists have surfaced. Aaron Glenn, a former Saints player and coach, is one of them, and others believe he is close to accepting the head coaching position with the New York Jets. If this happens, the Saints may have to resort to their backup plan.
According to Saints insider Nick Underhill, the backup plan could include hiring former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. Nonetheless, it appears that if given the option, Glenn would be their first pick.
“I believe the Saints are preparing for Aaron Glenn to accept the position with the Jets. They haven’t booked anything in terms of travel (not that the snow would allow it), but it seems like they’re getting things ready for the next step. But if he says no to New York, he’ll be back in the running. If I had to guess, I’d say Mike McCarthy is their next top pick, and I’m surprised they took so long to set things up with him given how interested they were in him early on while still signed with Dallas.
Sources in the building were strongly supporting him. I may be reading too much into that, but it’s just my instinct after covering the team. However, Kafka and Weaver are still in play and will be interviewed as soon as the weather clears. McCarthy is also slated to conduct in-person interviews this week.
If the Saints are pursuing McCarthy next, they may want to move quickly because so many other teams are still looking to lock up their head coach for next year. However, as Underhill pointed out, New Orleans may be waiting to see which team Glenn picks first.
