“Would Not Cost Much”: Green Bay Packers Journalist Asks Fans If They Should Bring Back Marquez Valdes-Scantling Next Year To Replace Christian Watson

The Green Bay Packers are considering making some changes in the wide receiver group this offseason. Last year, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks all had a lot of hope. Things will be different for this position as the offseason begins. Watson could miss the most of the 2025 season due to a ruptured ACL. Romeo Doubs could be traded this NFL offseason. The Green Bay Packers may have to contract or draft a top wide receiver option for quarterback Jordan Love.

The Packers are expected to enter the wide receiver market this offseason. The question is, which wide receiver will they sign? Zach Kruse of the Packers Wire asked on Twitter, “With Christian Watson out for probably 3/4ths of next season, would you consider bringing back Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a vet minimum deal?” This question was met with disapproval from many Packers fans.

Cem Yolbulan of dairylandexpress.com had his own thoughts on Kruse’s Twitter inquiry about Valdes-Scantling succeeding Watson next season. Yolbulan stated, “Many Packers fans will take issue with the suggestion.” MVS has been a problematic pass receiver throughout his career, including four seasons in Green Bay. He is inconsistent and frequently drops passes. Given how frequently the Packers dropped passes this season, it’s reasonable that some supporters would be apprehensive to bring Valdes-Scantling in.

At the same time, MVS would not cost much; he would likely accept a one-year, “prove-it” deal; if he doesn’t look like he could make an impact, he could be cut after training camp; however, if he still has some fuel left in the tank, he is as close to Watson as a player profile as the Packers could realistically get. It may not be the most exciting free-agent target for Green Bay, but MVS would be worth considering.

This past season, Marquez Valdes-Scantling played for the New Orleans Saints. He grabbed 19 receptions for 411 yards and four touchdowns, with an average of 21.6 yards per reception. Valdes-Scantling was targeted 44 times. He was with the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2021. Since then, Valdes-Scantling has played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and the New Orleans Saints. It would be surprising to see Marquez Valdes-Scantling return to the Packers to replace Christian Watson because they need to sign players like Tee Higgins instead.
