The Green Bay Packers are poised to have a fascinating offseason. While they must make the standard decisions about which players to re-sign and who to let go in free agency, they will also enter the new league year with more money to spend than in previous years. Of course, this is because the dead money from Aaron Rodgers’ deal with the team a few years ago is now gone. So is the dead money from David Bakhtiari’s contract.
With this money, many fans and pundits believe the team will recruit a wide receiver capable of taking over games and serving as Jordan Love’s primary throwing target. The Green Bay Packers are being urged to sign Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin. While there will be some bigger names on the market (Tee Higgins in particular), Eric Fischer of Fansided feels Green Bay might take a chance on Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin.
“This may be a stretch, but hear me out. Chris Godwin, a free agent, is coming off an ankle injury that limited his 2024 season to only seven games.During that span, Godwin had 50 receptions for 576 yards and five touchdowns, putting him third in touchdowns, fifth in yards, and tied for second in catches for the 2024 Packers. And he accomplished it in less than half a season. “Godwin, 6-foot-1, has blistering speed, having run a 4.42 40 at the NFL Combine before being picked by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Packer fans are familiar with Godwin. In the last two games versus Green Bay, he has caught 15 receptions for 265 yards.”Godwin is concerned about his health as he prepares for his 29th season. He has previously undergone ACL and ankle surgery as a result of the injury sustained this season. However, if you can lure him away from Tampa Bay, he may be an excellent addition to our club.” As Fischer points out, Godwin is coming off a season in which he played only seven games due to an ankle ailment. Nonetheless, he has exceeded 1,000 yards receiving in four of his eight NFL seasons and has never had fewer than 525, even while hindered by injuries.
The Green Bay Packers Would Have to Adapt to Having a WR1
Here’s the thing about the Packers signing a wide receiver: head coach and play-caller Matt LaFleur would have to fundamentally rethink his approach to the offense over the last two seasons. Godwin was targeted 86, 98, 104, and 83 times during the course of four seasons when he surpassed 1,000 receiving yards. Last season, Dontayvion Wicks led the Packers with 76 targets. Jayden Reed finished second out of 75. Romeo Doubs had 72. Christian Watson had only 53. Of course, LaFleur has previously directed an offense with a top wide receiver, as Davante Adams received over 100 targets every season in Green Bay. Fans are well aware that they did not win any Super Bowls at the time.
Adding a player like Godwin is not a terrible idea, but it is necessary to be pragmatic and accept that neither he nor Higgins will be the automatic fix that fans may expect.
