The Chicago Cubs were unable to reach an agreement with the player they made a big deal for. The Cubs and outfielder Kyle Tucker were unable to agree on a compensation for 2025, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers. Rogers said that the Cubs filed for $15 million, while Tucker sought $17.5 million.
Tucker was acquired by the Cubs on December 13th, in one of the largest moves of the MLB offseason thus far. In exchange for Tucker, the Cubs traded third baseman Isaac Paredes, right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski, and third baseman Cam Smith to Houston. Smith was regarded as the No. 73 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline. The Tucker trade restructured the Cubs’ roster. It led to the Cubs trading Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees.
Tucker was limited to 78 games in 2024 due to a slight fracture in his right shin, but his stat line was.289/.408/.585. He hit 23 home runs and walked 56 times while striking out 54. This earned Tucker his third consecutive MLB All-Star selection. Tucker turns 28 on January 17 and is only under Cubs control through the 2025 season. Tucker will likely enter free agency next winter or try to negotiate a contract extension with the Cubs. Tucker may only play one season with the Cubs.
“We made this deal with the expectation that it would be worth it for one year of Kyle Tucker,” Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins said. “We certainly felt like that was the case.”
