The Green Bay Packers are preparing for an NFC Wild Card matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, current New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams is the one making headlines. In a Friday interview on Up and Adams, Adams hinted at a potential reunion with the Green Bay Packers. When Kay Adams asked if he would accept a phone call from “a team that rhymes with Smackers,” the Jets receiver replied bluntly.
“You cannot rule anything out. “I have a lot of affection for all of the teams I’ve played for,” he remarked. “I would not rule out anyone. Obviously, I believe some of the fanbases I’ve had are bitter because they didn’t comprehend what I was going through and the decision I took for the benefit of my own career, which appeared to hurt everyone.”
Adams continued to keep his choices open, but did mention the Packers by name. “I am keeping my mind open to anyone. The Packers are a wonderful team, and if they felt like that was a possibility for me, like I said, I’m still with the Jets. I can’t be out here talking about other teams. This is going to be a different offseason. Talking about potential landing locations is a little different this time, but we’re maintaining an open mind.”
Davante Adams’ History with the Green Bay Packers Adams was picked by the Packers in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He soon established himself as one of the top receivers in the game, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ favorite target. In eight seasons with the Packers, Adams has 669 receptions, 8,121 yards, and 73 touchdowns. Adams is one of the finest wide receivers in Packers history, having been named to five Pro Bowls.
Following the 2021, Adams unexpectedly demanded a trade. It was granted in March 2022, and Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in return for a conditional third-round selection pick. After two seasons and another Pro Bowl selection, Adams sought to reunite with Rodgers in New York. After an unimpressive 2024 season, Adams may be seeking for another home, which may lead him directly to the Packers’ door.
The 32-year-old still has a lot more in the tank. Since leaving Green Bay, Adams has 288 receptions for 3,723 yards and 30 touchdowns. Adams, despite being on the wrong side of 30, boasts a skill set that any business would want. Good time for Adams’ comments. Adams’ statements come at an interesting moment for the Green Bay Packers. While the offensive has been effective, the squad lacks a true number one receiver. Christian Watson, a former second-round pick, is probably the closest thing to that, but after tearing his ACL in Week 18, his availability is a major question mark.
Even if Watson was healthy, his lack of productivity since 2023 has left Green Bay wanting more from its top wideouts. In the last two seasons, Watson has totaled 57 receptions, 1042 yards, and seven touchdowns – not necessarily horrible figures, but not enough to consider him a lock to be the team’s number one receiver in 2025. While Watson is likely to remain on the roster, the Packers have approximately $64.3 million in cap space to work with this offseason. Making the re-acquisition of Davante Adams feasible.
If the Packers want to acquire Adams, who is in year four of a five-year, $140 million agreement originally signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, they will need to make a trade with the Jets or wait for his release. According to Over the Cap, Adams’ contract does not have any guaranteed money left on it. He would also be paid $6.2 million in 2025 and $4.181 million in 2026.
Time will tell whether the Green Bay Packers explore such a move. However, Sunday’s Wild Card game against the Eagles may motivate general manager Brian Gutekunst to make another historic transaction.
