When you quit your team, there will be consequences. This is true at all levels, from professional to junior sports. It’s a bad appearance, and it manifests itself openly when performed on a national stage. The San Francisco 49ers were not going to be fooled by a former Minnesota Gophers star. Minnesota’s De’Vondre Campbell is done for good with San Francisco.
Despite the fact that the game was streamed on Amazon’s Prime program, Thursday Night Football remains a nationally broadcasted event. It was a nasty one, but the San Francisco 49ers saw it become even more ludicrous when former Minnesota Gophers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell chose not to participate. He is now facing the repercussions. Campbell signed a one-year contract with the 49ers this summer to replace the injured Dre Greenlaw as the starter. He did so for the first 12 games of the season until being activated as a reserve on Thursday night with Greenlaw returning. Campbell declined to enter the game when asked by the coaching staff and eventually fled the field to the locker room in the fourth quarter.
By suspending him for three games, the 49ers avoid paying the veteran’s full wage and deny him the option to find work elsewhere. Given his selfish acts, it’s probable that his career will end as well. Campbell has appeared in 128 games since being picked in the fourth round by Atlanta. This season, he recorded 79 tackles, three for loss, and a quarterback hit for San Francisco. The Gophers standout, who was an All-Pro in Green Bay during the 2021 season, has taken a significant drop in popularity.
It will be fascinating to see what market Campbell sees during the offseason. San Francisco closes the season with games against Miami, Detroit, and Arizona.
