ESPN Update: Former first-round guard linked with Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves entered the season with a significantly different look after trading Karl-Anthony Towns. If Julius Randle is relocated to a new location before the trade deadline, they may appear very different. They are still looking for roster enhancements, and the guard position offers an opportunity.

A new guard joins the Minnesota Timberwolves rotation.

This season, Chris Finch’s performance as Timberwolves head coach has been mixed. He has relied heavily on veteran guard Mike Conley while doing nothing to introduce emerging talent Rob Dillingham into the game. Anthony Edwards has stagnated owing to the configuration around him, and improved shooting could benefit the rotation as a whole. Enter Lonnie Walker IV. NBA Insider Marc Stein is one of the most informed sources in the league. His most recent report names the Timberwolves as a potential contender for the former first-round choice. Walker IV was selected 18th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in 2018. He spent the first four seasons of his career there, peaking at 12.1 points per game in 2021-22.

He shot 42% from the field the previous year and had a 40.6% three-point percentage in 2019-20. After Walker IV left San Antonio, the Lakers and Nets both took a chance on him, but he never found a long-term home with either team. After a brief stay with Boston during training camp, he elected to play overseas rather than in the G-League. Walker IV gained interest after betting on himself this fall, averaging 14.7 points per game on 43.7% shooting. He has appeared in 11 games and demonstrated strong ballhandling abilities while not committing many turnovers.

It seems tough to believe Finch would be willing to add another player to the rotation. Still, if there’s a method to alter the lineup, Walker IV may be included. So far this season, the Timberwolves have underperformed, although they have recently won three consecutive games.
