The Vancouver Canucks and the Buffalo Sabres could be about to make a transaction. It’s two months until the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, and both teams appear to be considering trade options to shake up their squads. Given recent conjecture, it’s feasible that both teams will link and pull off a massive transaction. The Canucks are dealing with internal concerns in their locker room between Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller, which has produced a gap in team harmony. According to Elliotte Friedman, Vancouver may be willing to part with one of its stars to help resolve the concerns in the room.
Buffalo’s season hasn’t gone as planned, and they could benefit from a massive squad shake-up. The Sabres would most likely want Pettersson because he fits better into their system than Miller.
Potential Trade Proposal
Vancouver Canucks: Dylan Cozens, Bowen Byram, and a 2026 second-round draft selection. Buffalo Sabres’ Elias Pettersson
The Canucks will not deal Pettersson for anything less than a fantastic return; teams must pay the price. The asking price is likely to be significant. If the Sabres want him, they may have to part ways with Dylan Cozens and Bowen Byram. The money isn’t far off, making this a financially viable transaction – $11.6 million from the Canucks and $10.95 million from the Sabres.
Why Buffalo Works? Vancouver could address both their forward group and their blue line if they parted ways with their best player. Byram would provide an additional offensive defenseman to play behind Quinn Hughes. Especially with Filip Hronek out due to injury, it would offer additional offense to the backside, which may greatly benefit the club. Cozens plays in an entirely different style than Pettersson. He has similar characteristics to Miller: he works hard, can score, and isn’t afraid to throw the body. If the Canucks want to keep Miller and play in his manner, Cozens is the best choice in return.
Buffalo is getting a former 100-point scorer who could benefit from a change of location and a lower profile. He would fit well on a line with Tage Thompson and has the ability to return to the NHL’s 100-point scoring record. Pettersson’s addition further strengthens the Sabres’ top line of Tuch-Thompson-Pettersson, which has the potential to significantly alter the team’s dynamic.
If Vancouver is aggressively shopping for Pettersson, GM Patrik Alvin will be busy. When a player as excellent as him becomes available, all 31 other clubs — or at least all of the teams who can afford a player with his cap hit — conduct due diligence to determine whether they have what it takes to complete the transaction. If Alvin were clever, he would look to Buffalo as a prospective suitor; they can even use the Jack Eichel trade as a benchmark to make the move work.
