Sunderland are currently in the running to recruit an attractive Premier League teenager during the January transfer window, marking a new link for the Black Cats. The January transfer market starts in only a few days, and for Sunderland, it will undoubtedly be a crucial refueling point as they seek promotion from the Championship. Sunderland’s last game was a 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers, which pitted two top six contenders. But the Black Cats likely should have won after squandering a 2-1 lead late on. Regis Le Bris’ side is now in fourth place in the Championship league, four points behind leaders Leeds United.
Sunderland fans believe a new striker is required in January, despite Le Bris has frequently dismissed the possibility of Sunderland buying numerous players during the winter window. Instead, it appears that the Black Cats will have their hands full regulating who departs the Stadium of Light. However, a new name has been connected with a prospective move to Wearside.
Ben Jacobs believes Sunderland are interested in Chelsea’s Harvey Vale. Harvey Vale, a Chelsea prodigy, appears to be on the verge of a loan move away from Stamford Bridge in January, with Sunderland among the clubs keeping an eye on the 21-year-old. The offensive midfielder has yet to make his Premier League debut with the Blues. However, Vale has spent time on loan with Hull City and Bristol City in the last two seasons. Vale scored twice and assisted five times in 39 League One games for Bristol Rovers last season, earning the title of ‘phenomenal’ talent from then-manager Joey Barton.
Vale has three goals and two assists in five Premier League 2 games for Chelsea’s U21s this season, and journalist Ben Jacobs has uncovered some high-level interest in the England U20s star. Anderlecht of the Belgian Jupiler League, Heerenveen of the Dutch Eredivisie, and Sunderland are all interested in signing Vale in the new year.
Jacobs made an announcement on X: “Understand Harvey Vale is attracting interest from Anderlecht, Heerenveen and Sunderland.” Do Sunderland prefer a loan or a permanent agreement for Harvey Vale at Chelsea? Jacobs’ tweet does not specify if Sunderland will pursue a loan or a permanent transfer. Given Sunderland’s restricted budget and the fact that Vale remains a Chelsea prospect, it would seem natural for it to be a loan deal.
However, journalist Simon Phillips recently stated on Substack that Chelsea may attempt to transfer Vale permanently in the New Year unless he signs a new contract; his present term expires in the summer of 2025. As a result, Sunderland may find him more affordable. And if the Black Cats cash in on one of their great players, a trade for Vale may become feasible.
