The Black Cats midfielder is a guy in demand, having impressed under Regis Le Bris. Chris Rigg, a sensational Sunderland attacking midfielder, has been linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid, but he has been told not to leave until he is ready. Danny Mills, an ex-Leeds United and Manchester City defender, issued the warning, stating that he would not be shocked if the 17-year-old stayed with the Black Cats beyond this season, which will please Wearside fans.
Rigg, a Sunderland academy graduate, is in high demand heading into the January transfer window. In addition to being connected with big European clubs, he has piqued the curiosity of Wolves and League One Birmingham City. Mills, a pundit and former Sunderland player, spoke about Rigg’s future at the club during talkSPORT’s Championship preview. Presenter Hugh Woozencroft stated that he would be “stunned” if Rigg stayed with Sunderland beyond this season, to which Mills responded, “I wouldn’t.
“They [major teams] should consider pursuing Rigg. But, as a young athlete, I believe you must exercise extreme caution and refrain from leaving too soon. He’s young. He’s having a fantastic spell at the moment. But things can change very quickly.” Mills stated, “He will not join a Premier League club and play every week. I’d reply, ‘Okay, but I want to stay on loan for the season’. Surely that works for both clubs?” Selling Rigg next summer and then keeping him on loan could be beneficial for Sunderland, but whether the club should sell him depends on whether they stay in the Championship or advance to the Premier League.
