Fulham, managed by former manager Marco Silva, competes in the Premier League. Marco Silva regretted Fulham’s draw against Everton, claiming the outcome was ‘unfair’ to the visitors. The Toffees extended their unbeaten streak to five games with a last-gasp 1-1 draw at Goodison Park. Fulham were the stronger team for much of the game, and Alex Iwobi returned to haunt his former club by opening the goal shortly after the hour mark.
However, the Cottagers paid a high price for failing to capitalize on their dominant position. Everton substitute Beto scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to ensure a shared victory. Silva admitted that Fulham did not take use of the opportunities they generated and could have done better with Beto’s involvement. He told BBC Sport: “It’s extremely difficult for us and the guys in the locker room. We did not allow them any opportunities to press high. We frustrated their press. We dominated the game.
“We created clear chances to score. The outcome is absolutely unfair because we should have scored one or two more goals. We had a few chances to score, but it’s difficult to win games when you’re far superior than the opponent. We should have scored the second goal to absolutely end their aspirations. We did not. Unfortunately for us, there was a point when we should have done much more to defend the ball in the box. The players are sad right now, but they should be pleased of how they played. The points will come to us. Being more clinical, with a bit more quality in the assault. We should have scored higher because we created plenty.
“When I say we’re down, it’s because football wasn’t fair tonight. It’s not easy to come here and control how we did things. Looking at the big picture, we should be delighted with how we’ve started the season. We should have more points than we have now because they deserve it. Given how they’ve been playing, we probably deserve more. But if you keep going this way, fantastic things will happen for us.”
Silva returned to Goodison Park after one and a half years as Everton’s manager. If Fulham draw the Toffees in the FA Cup, it will be his last game at L4 before Everton move to their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock the following season.
He said it was ’emotional’ in the lead-up to kickoff, but he was focused on the game as soon as the first whistle blew. He added in his post-match press conference: “When I mentioned Goodison, if the FA Cup does not go in the same direction, it will be my last game as an away manager. Of all, it is a unique location, and even if you come as an away manager, it is a historic place to be. If you are Everton’s manager, you can feel it more every week. The last time, it was usually emotional, but as the game began, you forgot about everything.
“I planned to win the game, and my squad showed it; they should have won it easily. The Premier League is about the closing few minutes of a football game. That is simply not Goodison because putting center defenders and ten players causes you to play long balls all the time. It can happen at Goodison Park, where the fans are more vocal, but it can happen anywhere.”
