Green Bay Packers: Packers made right decision by signing TE to the 53-man roster.

The Green Bay Packers have added tight end John FitzPatrick to their roster from the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad. As Luke Musgrave recovers from ankle soreness, this gives some insurance to their squad. Former Georgia players Eric Stokes, Javon Bullard, Devonte Wyatt, and Quay Walker are all on the Packers’ roster. FitzPatrick will be the fifth Georgia Bulldog on the 53-man roster.

FitzPatrick is a powerful run-blocking tight end who occasionally slips out for redzone targets. Because of his typical role as a blocker and his size (6’7″ 250lbs), he can generate favorable matchups when running routes in short yardage situations. After the 2022 draft, Falcons scout Shepley Heard said of John FitzPatrick, “He’s the guy who does the dirty work.” He’s a blocking tight end. He’s huge, strong, aggressive, vicious, and usually tries to finish people.”

The Atlanta Falcons selected John FitzPatrick in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. He spent the season on the NFL’s injured reserve list and played in nine games for the Atlanta Falcons, catching one ball for 12 yards. He had 18 offensive snaps and 83 special teams snaps. The Falcons released John FitzPatrick during the final cutdowns, but he was added to the inaugural practice squad. He appeared in three preseason games for the Falcons and caught six passes for 33 yards.

John Fitzpatrick’s statistics for the Georgia Bulldogs John Fitzpatrick played 38 games for Georgia, starting 13 of them. He caught 17 catches for 200 yards and a touchdown, primarily as an inline blocking tight end. FitzPatrick started seven of the 15 games he played as a redshirt junior, catching six passes for 83 yards as the Bulldogs won the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship. He had been playing with broken bones in both feet for the most of the season.

Packers tight ends Luke Musgrave is heading into IR. Because his rookie deal does not include a split, Luke Musgrave will still count for his entire salary cap amount if he is placed on injured reserve. Splits are frequently used in 3rd+ round picks and minimum contracts to minimize base salaries while on IR. FitzPatrick will be on the Packers’ 53-man roster for three weeks. Replacing John FitzPatrick will cost $660,833.
