Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel made a surprising announcement today regarding the return of former Dolphins quarterback Sage Rosenfels to the team in a coaching capacity. Rosenfels, who played for the Dolphins between 2002 and 2005, will join the Dolphins’ coaching staff as a quarterback consultant, focusing on mentoring the team’s current quarterbacks, including Tua Tagovailoa.
In a press conference, McDaniel expressed his excitement about bringing Rosenfels back into the Dolphins organization. “Sage has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be invaluable to our quarterback room,” McDaniel said. “He’s been in the trenches as a player, understands the ups and downs of playing the position, and has a unique perspective that we believe can help our guys elevate their game. We’re thrilled to have him on board.”
Rosenfels, who had an 11-year NFL career, spent time with several teams, including the Houston Texans and Minnesota Vikings, in addition to his time with the Dolphins. While he never reached elite status, Rosenfels was known for his strong work ethic, football IQ, and leadership. Since retiring in 2012, he has remained active in the football community, working as an analyst and developing a reputation as a sharp football mind with a deep understanding of the quarterback position.
McDaniel emphasized that Rosenfels’ role will be more focused on quarterback development rather than play-calling or game management. “He’s going to work closely with our quarterbacks, breaking down film, refining techniques, and offering guidance on the mental aspects of the game,” McDaniel explained. “He’s walked in their shoes and knows what it takes to handle the pressure and challenges that come with playing quarterback in the NFL.”
Rosenfels expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity in a statement. “I’m excited to be back with the Dolphins and help contribute to the success of this team,” he said. “I’ve always had a passion for coaching and mentoring younger players, and I believe I can help our quarterbacks reach their full potential.”
