Ahead of their 2024 season opener in Brazil, the Green Bay Packers have made a number of personnel moves to give their injury-plagued backfield more depth.
The Packers placed rusher Nate McCrary on the practice squad/injured reserve list on August 30 and added former Kansas City Chiefs rushing back and 2020 fourth-round pick La’Mical Perine to their practice squad, according to the team’s transaction wire.
Prior to Week 1 of the 2024 regular season, the Packers lack depth at the running back position. Their second-best rusher, rookie MarShawn Lloyd, is recovering from a hamstring ailment and is doubtful to play against the Philadelphia Eagles. Veteran AJ Dillon is out for the season after suffering a neck injury during training camp.
The only healthy running backs on the 53-man roster for the Packers would be second-year player Emanuel Wilson and Jacobs if they are unable to clear Lloyd in time to play against the Eagles. In such case, the organization would probably add Ellis Merriweather, a fellow running back, or Perine from the practice squad to the Eagles gameday roster.
On August 30, the Packers added fullback Andrew Beck and rookie cornerback Kamal Hadden, selected in the sixth round, to their 16-man practice squad.
