Jasper Johnson, a five-star guard in 2025, is about to make a decision — or several decisions. For starters, he must disclose his plans for his last season of high school basketball. That intersects with the reclassification debate that has dogged the Lexington native for years, and it is finally about to come to a conclusion based on that first decision. Will he enroll in college or high school in the coming weeks, thereby establishing himself as a member of the ’25 class? He says to expect the latter.
Following that, he committed to attending college. He’s in choice mode right now and should have made a decision on a school by the end of the summer, possibly “in the next month or so.”
“I’ll be announcing where I’m finishing up high school, where I’ll be playing my senior year (soon),” Johnson said during Peach Jam. “And then in the following month or two, I’ll make my college decision. I’ll probably shorten my list soon and proceed from there. I’m doing a lot of planning for my future. I’m just being patient and enjoying the moment while playing this game and completing the AAU season.”
Johnson’s list will almost certainly include at least three colleges, with Alabama, Kentucky, and North Carolina regarded as the major contenders. And while a few others continue to compete for his basketball skills, the five-star guard is pondering “maybe one or two more” trips before making a decision. Those will be to “Arkansas, possibly Louisville, perhaps Baylor — but I’m not sure yet. “I have nothing planned.”
