David Gilmour fans should be delighted, as the Pink Floyd guitarist believes his new album, Luck and Strange, is his best work since The Dark Side of the Moon. Gilmour makes the big claim in a new interview with Prog, where he discusses the album, which will be released on September 6 via Sony. “It’s over 50 years now since The Dark Side of the Moon,” Mr. Gilmour states. “My feeling is that this album is the best album I’ve made in all those years since 1973 when The Dark Side of the Moon came out.”

The Dark Side of the Moon is widely regarded as one of the best progressive rock albums of all time, with singles such as Money, Time, Breathe (In The Air), and Brain Damage. In terms of content to compare it to, Luck and Strange has only released two singles: The Piper’s Call and Between Two Points. We’ve included those tracks below so you can evaluate Gilmour’s appeal for yourself.

And if you enjoy what you’ve heard thus far, Gilmour has material for a follow-up album in the works. “Our plan is simply to get this one out and run it, and then do another one right away,” he says later in the interview. “I will work with all of these people again. I’ve had this situation in the past where I wanted to put myself in the studio with a few folks and just toss everything about, but I didn’t know who those individuals were. “And that pressure is now gone, since I have these phone numbers. It feels like a team, and I enjoy being on a team; I didn’t choose to be a single artist.”

He goes on to say, “When you’re young in a band, you’re equal members from the start: you may shout at each other, criticize each other, and have any tantrum you want, but you always stick together. “However, once you’ve reached a higher level of accomplishment, the majority of those who enter your sphere will look to you. They won’t be like [Luck and Strange, alt-J producers]. Charlie Andrew – Charlie is the type of refreshing experience you want to have.
