Right-hander Frankie Montas was acquired by the Milwaukee Brewers from the Cincinnati Reds in a trade, the organization announced Tuesday morning.
Cincinnati acquired cash, outfielder Joey Wiemer, and right-handed pitcher Jakob Junis in return.
In 149 games (118 starts) over his Major League Baseball career, Montas, 31, is 41-43 with a 4.05 ERA while playing for the White Sox, Athletics, Yankees, and Reds. He played in the postseason with the Athletics in 2020 and 2022. Throughout his 19 starts this season with the Reds, he was 4-8 with a 5.01 ERA.
The Brewers claimed that 2021 was Montas’ finest season, as he placed sixth in the American League Cy Young Award voting. In 32 starts, he had a 13-9 record and a 3.37 ERA. In terms of starts, quality starts, innings pitched, ERA, strikeouts, and victories during that season, he was in the top five in the American League.
Junis, 31, signed as a free agent on February 7 and played in 10 games (one start) for Milwaukee this season. He had a 2.42 ERA, one save, and a record of 4-0. While on the injured list from April 6 to June 20, he missed 69 games.
