The Yankees revealed during a wild game at Fenway Park on Saturday night that Jazz Chisholm Jr. had been formally acquired by the team from the Marlins for three prospects.
Chisholm, who was selected to start as the National League’s second baseman for the 2022 All-Star Game, has played center field for the most of the previous two seasons in order to create space for Miami to sign All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez. Chisholm only recently moved back to second base a few times a week to reduce his amount of outfield running after Arraez was traded to the Padres in May.
“He’s a dynamic player,” Aaron Judge remarked with a smile. “You can insert him at the front of the lineup or anywhere else; he will undoubtedly extend it. He is an armament. He can be placed wherever in the infield, including in the outfield. We’re all quite happy to have him on board because he has strength and quickness.
Chisholm had double-digit hits (thirteen) and stolen bases (twenty-two) for the fourth straight season, despite his declining home run output. Despite seeing fewer pitches to hit, Chisholm has one of the biggest whiff rate increases in MLB, going from 35.7% to 28.6%. Baseball Savant claims that he also demonstrates excellent baserunning run value.
