After playing six seasons for the Dallas Cowboys and staring at Colorado State, Michael Gallup announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday. The Raiders’ front office was taken aback by Gallup’s decision, which was put on the retired/reserve list. ESPN’s Ed Werder said on Friday.
This offseason, Gallup inked a $3 million one-year contract with the Raiders. A day before Las Vegas was due to report for training camp, he announced his retirement while participating in structured team activities and minicamp. After Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers, Gallup was anticipated to contend for the No. 3 receiving position with the Raiders.
Before making an impressive play in the Cowboys’ season-ending defeat to the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round of the playoffs, the 28-year-old caught 33 catches for 507 yards as a rookie in 2018. After Amari Cooper, he was the second-leading Cowboys receiver in 2019 with 66 receptions for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns.
Gallup suffered an ACL tear in January 2022, and he never fully fully recovered. Despite playing in all 17 of the Cowboys’ games the previous season, he only caught 34 receptions for 418 yards, which was fourth on the team.
In order to clear cap space, the Cowboys waived Gallup in March. A few weeks later, he signed with the Raiders.
