Everton are due to pay Lyon €18 million for defender Jake O’Brien, according to an agreement reached between the teams. Foot Mercato reports that the defender is ‘set to return to the Premier League’ after spending time in France. According to reports, O’Brien, who has been a’real revelation’ since joining Everton from Crystal Palace for €1 million, is likely to finish his spell across the Channel.
The Toffees have ‘increased’ their pursuit of the defender in recent hours, and his move from Lyon is now ‘just a question of time’. According to FM, Lyon and Everton have agreed on a €18 million deal for the defender, and O’Brien has also agreed to join Goodison Park on a five-year contract. O’Brien was left out of Lyon’s pre-season friendly against St. Pauli on Wednesday to protect him as the deal with the Toffees progressed, and the transfer should be completed this weekend when he passes a medical.
Lyon are eager to complete the transaction since they need to sell this summer and will earn handsomely from O’Brien, who will be the first of several potential major departures for the French club.
