Sam Hauser has agreed to a four-year, $45 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics that will keep him there through 2029, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe. There is a complete guarantee for every season.
The 26-year-old shooter’s new contract should be viewed in the context of Klay Thompson’s three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks and Buddy Hield’s four-year, $38 million contract with the Golden State Warriors.
Hauser began his career as a developing success story in Maine before becoming an important member of Boston’s Finals top-8 lineup. Last season, he made 42.4% of his shots from outside the arc, going 11 of 23 in June while playing lockdown defense against Luka Doncic.
According to Woj, ownership will be faced with a projected cap sheet of “$225 million with an additional $210 million luxury tax penalty” when Hauser’s new contract begins in 2025–2026. This also applies to Derrick White’s and Jayson Tatum’s extensions. The potential sale of the team in the future raises the possibility that those second-apron worries will become a problem.
However, it seems the Celtics are securing their championship team for the long haul rather than just trying to win it back next season.
